Two formats, one capture
Sandboxes and interactive demos both start from the same place: a real product capture. The difference is what you build on top. A sandbox gives the prospect a fully clickable replica they can explore at their own pace. An interactive demo gives them a guided path through specific steps, with tooltips and narration telling the story.
Both are valid. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on where the buyer is in their journey and what you want them to do after they finish.
When to use a sandbox
A sandbox works best when the prospect is early in the funnel and wants to understand the product on their own terms. They are not ready for a guided pitch. They want to click around, try things, and form their own opinion before talking to sales.
Sandboxes are especially effective for products with complex UIs where screenshots cannot convey the experience. If your product is the kind of tool that clicks once someone tries it, a sandbox removes the friction of signup, onboarding, and empty-state confusion that kills first impressions.
When to use an interactive demo
An interactive demo works best when you need to control the narrative. You want the prospect to see specific features in a specific order, with context that explains why each step matters. This is the right format for sales leave-behinds, feature launches, and onboarding flows where you know the happy path.
Interactive demos are also faster to consume. A five-step guided walkthrough takes 90 seconds. An open sandbox can take 10 minutes if the prospect gets curious. When attention is scarce, the guided format wins.
The decision framework
Ask two questions. First: does the prospect know what they are looking for, or do they need to discover it? If they know, guide them with an interactive demo. If they need to explore, give them a sandbox.
Second: what do you want them to do next? If the goal is a meeting, use a demo with a CTA at the end. If the goal is self-serve signup, use a sandbox that lets them experience enough value to convert on their own.
